This article is from Genome Research , volume 22 . Abstract As the sequencing of healthy and disease genomes becomes more commonplace, detailed annotation provides interpretation for individual variation responsible for normal and disease phenotypes. Current approaches focus on direct changes in protein coding genes, particularly nonsynonymous mutations that directly affect the gene product. However, most individual variation occurs outside of genes and, indeed, most markers generated from...

This article is from BMC Public Health , volume 12 . Abstract Background: Overweight and obesity are steadily increasing worldwide with the greatest prevalence occurring in high-income countries. Many factors influence body mass index (BMI); however multiple influences assessed in families and individuals are rarely studied together in a prospective design. Our objective was to model the impact of multiple influences at the child (low birth weight, history of maltreatment, a history of...

Methods:: A meta-analysis was undertaken using a random effects model to investigate the association between diabetes and breast cancer risk. Results:: Thirty-nine independent risk estimates were available from observational epidemiological studies. The summary relative risk (SRR)...

This article is from Arthritis Research & Therapy , volume 16 . Abstract Introduction: Acid-sensing ion channel 3 (ASIC3) is expressed in synoviocytes, activated by decreases in pH, and reduces inflammation in animal models of inflammatory arthritis. The purpose of the current study was to characterize potential mechanisms underlying the control of inflammation by ASIC3 in fibroblast-like synoviocytes (FLS). Methods: Experiments were performed in cultured FLS from wild-type (WT) and...

We present measurements of the angular correlation function of galaxies selected from a B_J=23.5 multicolour survey of two 5 degree by 5 degree fields located at high galactic latitudes. The galaxy catalogue of approximately 400,000 galaxies is comparable in size to catalogues used to determine the galaxy correlation function at low-redshift. Measurements of the z=0.4 correlation function at large angular scales show no evidence for a break from a power law though our results are not...

The PHENIX experiment at the Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider has performed a systematic study of $K_S^0$ and $K^{*0}$ meson production at midrapidity in $p$$+$$p$, $d$$+$Au, and Cu$+$Cu collisions at $\sqrt{s_{_{NN}}}=200$ GeV. The $K_S^0$ and $K^{*0}$ mesons are reconstructed via their $K_S^0 \rightarrow \pi^0(\rightarrow \gamma\gamma)\pi^0(\rightarrow\gamma\gamma)$ and $K^{*0} \rightarrow K^{\pm}\pi^{\mp}$ decay modes, respectively. The measured transverse-momentum spectra are used to...

This article is from Disease Models & Mechanisms , volume 6 . Abstract The regenerative response to drug- and toxin-induced liver injury induces changes to the hepatic stroma, including the extracellular matrix. Although the extracellular matrix is known to undergo changes during the injury response, its impact on maintaining hepatocyte function and viability in this process remains largely unknown. We demonstrate that recovery from toxin-mediated injury is impaired in mice deficient in a...

Gravitational waves from precessing black-hole binaries exhibit features that are absent in nonprecessing systems. The most prominent of these is a parity-violating asymmetry that beams energy and linear momentum preferentially along or opposite to the orbital angular momentum, leading to recoil of the binary. The asymmetry will appear as amplitude and phase modulations at the orbital frequency. For strongly precessing systems, it accounts for at least 3% amplitude modulation for binaries in...

The people who become and stay fit are different. They have a work ethic. The push their threshold at the gym. They fuel with good foods and they take whole food supplements that fill in the gaps. If you eat crappy food and take lousy supplements, you will perform poorly and eventually breakdown in the gym and in business. “Even if you eat 3 - 5 servings of vegetables daily, you are still falling short. You need to supplement to avoid deficiencies.” - Dr. Jeffrey Blumberg, Ph.D.
